Curls Combo out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk lines up with a trips look weak side and a single receiver marked as the number one read to the closed side. The lone receiver runs a vertical release straight up the field as the deep clear out, while the trips side stacks two curl routes at different depths with an inside receiver working a short flat/angle route underneath to hold linebackers. This is a zone beater concept designed to sit in the soft spots of a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell, and the primary read progression starts with the deep vertical to check for a blown coverage or matchup, then works back to the intermediate curl sitting down in the window, using the underneath flat route as the checkdown against a hard flat defender.
Watch the deep safety alignment presnap, since a single high safety often signals Cover 3 which opens the curl windows on the trips side If the corner on the lone receiver side plays outside leverage and shows man technique, expect Cover 1 or Cover 3 match and be ready to hot route the vertical into a quicker breaking route Track the flat defender after the snap, if he sinks with the curl instead of staying home in the flat this concept beats zone coverage cleanly Beware of a user controlled linebacker sitting in the intermediate zone as a lurk threat, since he can jump the curl route if the quarterback holds the ball too long Against Cover 2, look for the underneath flat route to occupy the corner while the curl settles behind him in the natural seam between zones
Presnap identify whether the defense is showing two high or one high safety, since this concept thrives against zone shells that leave soft spots between the levels
If the corner over your number one receiver bails deep at the snap, work your eyes to the curl sitting down at the sticks for an easy conversion on third down
Use the underneath flat route as your answer against a hard blitz look, since it releases quickly and gives you a built in checkdown versus pressure
Pair this play with Curls or Mtn Curls in your play calling sequence to keep the defense guessing on route depth while showing the same trips formation
Best used on second and medium or third and short to medium since the curl routes settle in at reliable sticks depth against zone drops
