Hi Lo Dig lines up out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk with a trips bunch to one side and a single receiver to the weak side. The trips side stacks two vertical dig routes at different depths (the hi lo read) with the outside receiver breaking underneath on a shallow drag, while the backside single receiver runs a deep crossing route and the RB releases into a flat route from the backfield. The design is built to stress zone defenses with the two-level dig stack, but it also holds up against man coverage thanks to the natural rub created by the crossing routes, making the primary read the deep dig into the underneath dig, working from high to low based on the linebacker drop.

Defensive Reads

If the defense rotates to a single high safety after the snap, expect tighter windows on the digs and prioritize the crossing route or flat check down instead.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify if the defense is showing two high or single high safety look, since this play thrives against two high shells that leave the middle dig windows open.

Use the hi lo dig read by starting on the deeper dig route and working down to the shallow dig if the deep window is capped by a robber or deep middle defender.

Motion the trips receiver before the snap to help diagnose man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and you can lean on the crossing routes for natural picks.

Pair this play with Dig Cross or Bounce Slot Cross in the same set to keep defenses guessing between single dig reads and full dig cross combos out of the same trips look.

Best called on second or third down between 5 and 12 yards, since the dig routes need time to develop and the sticks fall right in that range.
