Breakdown

Mtn Shock H Opt is a play-action option package out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk with a motion tag that shifts the H back across the formation before the snap. At the snap the trips side runs a vertical stack with the outside receiver on a deep corner route and the inside slot man breaking on a quick out, while the backside single receiver runs a comeback and the H back releases into a short option route underneath. The read progression starts with the deep corner route for the explosive shot, works down to the H back option route as the built in checkdown, and the backside comeback serves as a late window man beater against trail technique.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, watch the safety alignment on the trips side: a single high safety struggles to cover the deep corner route without help, making this play deadly against Cover 3 and Cover 1. Track the linebacker assigned to the motion man since his reaction tells you if the defense is in man or zone before the snap. Post-snap, look for a user controlled defender sitting in the deep third or playing lurk over the corner route, as this is the primary way to shut down the shot play. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the corner route into a tight window, so if you see two high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the H back option route instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow drops leave the option route open, while deep drops or a spy on the H back signal the defense is baiting you into a low percentage throw.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone: if the defender follows the H across the formation you have a clean man beater matchup on the option route.

Take the deep corner shot on early downs or in two minute situations when the defense shows single high safety look, since the corner route attacks the numbers before the safety can rotate over.

On third and medium, key the option route from the H back as your safety valve since it settles in the void of underneath zone defenders.

Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn PA Portland in your call sequence so the defense has to respect both the vertical shot and the crossing action out of the same formation and personnel look.

Against aggressive blitz looks, get the ball out quickly to the option route or the backside comeback since the deep corner route takes time to develop.
