Mtn Pump And Go is a play-action style vertical shot out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk with motion sending a receiver across pre-snap to adjust leverage. The diagram shows the motion man breaking outside then vertical up the sideline, the middle trips receiver running a deep out and up (pump and go) toward the corner, and the boundary receiver working a shallow out route as the checkdown. This is a man beater built to exploit the pump and go double move against aggressive corners, with the primary read starting on the pump and go route working outside, then progressing to the vertical seam, and finally the shallow out underneath if both routes are covered.
Watch the corner over the pump and go receiver pre-snap, if he is playing tight man press with no safety help over the top this play is live. Post-snap, key the flow of the motion defender, if he trails across the formation in man coverage the deep vertical route on that side will be open. Single high safety alignments are a green light for this concept since it removes deep help over the pump and go route. Cloud or two high safety shells with corners playing off coverage will bait the quarterback into throwing the pump and go into a trap, expect the underneath defender to jump the route. Disciplined zone linebackers who stay square and do not bite on the pump animation will shut down the double move, forcing the quarterback to the shallow out checkdown.
Use pre-snap motion to identify man coverage, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a strong indicator of man leverage that sets up the pump and go perfectly.
Hold the ball an extra beat after the pump animation to sell the double move, defenders playing aggressive man coverage will bite and open the window deep.
Best called on second and long or third and long situations where defenses are more likely to play man under a single high safety.
Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn Curls earlier in a series so the defense respects the shorter routes, making them more susceptible to biting on the double move here.
If the corner sits back and does not bite on the pump, check down immediately to the shallow out route to avoid a negative play against zone coverage.
