Breakdown

Quick Unders is a trips based quick game concept built to get the ball out fast against pressure. From the trips side, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical to clear space while the two inside receivers run under routes breaking back toward the quarterback, stacking crossers underneath the vertical. The backside X runs a deep comeback breaking away from the formation, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a swing or flat route to the boundary side, giving you a five way stretch of the underneath zones. The blocking scheme is a standard five man quick pass protection with no play-action or RPO elements, and the primary read progression starts with the inside under route from trips, works to the second under route, and checks down to the HB swing if the middle of the field is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the trips formation since a single high safety often signals man coverage or a blitz look that this quick game is designed to beat. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he sinks hard to the trips side under routes, use your checkdown to the HB swing on the opposite hash. Identify if a slot corner or safety is playing outside leverage on the inside trips receivers, tight man coverage there can jump the under routes if the quarterback is late with the throw. This concept struggles against a hard user blitz off the edge combined with man coverage underneath, since the quick unders need time and space to settle and a fast pressure negates the layered stretch. Zone coverage with soft cushions and linebackers who spot drop rather than sink deep is the ideal shell to attack, since the under routes will find the natural void behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short or medium situations where you need a quick answer against the blitz since the ball can come out in under two seconds.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone or man across the trips side. If you see two high safeties with linebackers sitting flat footed, the under routes will settle in soft spots for easy completions.

If the defense shows man coverage or you see a nano blitz look with defenders crashing the edge, hot route the HB swing to a quick flat or bail him out to the boundary to give your QB an outlet.

Pair this play in sequence with Bounce Slot Cross or Dig Cross from the same set so the defense has to respect deeper crossing concepts, which opens up the quick unders underneath once they start jumping the shallow stuff.

Against zone blitz teams, key the middle linebacker drop and throw opposite his leverage since the second under route will settle right behind him.
