The primary read progression starts with the option route out of the slot, then works to the flat/option route underneath, and finally to the deep corner as a shot play if the corner route defender bites on run action or gets beat deep.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for two high safeties versus single high, since two high shells usually mean the corner route has less deep help and becomes a viable shot if the defense jumps the option route. Watch linebacker depth over the trips bunch, as shaded or blitzing linebackers signal man coverage or a potential nano blitz that opens up the quick option route immediately. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender flowing to the trips side, since a lurking user linebacker or safety can jump the option route or flat and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. This play beats off man coverage and soft zone shells that give the option route room to break, but it struggles against aggressive man press with safety help over the top on the corner route, and it can be shut down by disciplined zone drops that wall off the underneath option and flat with a deep half safety over the corner.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the trips side, since the option route lives or dies on leverage. If you see press man or a corner sitting inside, hot route the option route to break outside for an easy pitch and catch. Against zone shells, look to the shallow option/flat combination underneath to sit in the soft spot before linebackers can wall it off. This play pairs well with Bounce PA Post Curls or Mtn PA Portland in your call sheet since both use similar trips alignment and can catch defenses cheating toward the option concept. Use this on early downs or third and short, since the option route naturally converts into a high percentage completion regardless of coverage, and if the defense keys on it too often, punish them with Sluggo Seam or Mtn Y Corner off the same formation.
