Same Side Zone is an outside zone run out of the Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk set, with the offensive line and TE flowing to the same side as the trips receivers to create an overload on the perimeter. The blocking scheme asks the tackle and TE to reach block while the guards climb to seal the second level, giving the HB a stretch-and-cut track. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a pure run play, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside cutback lane first, then bend it back through the A gap if the edge gets sealed too hard.
Watch for a stacked box pre-snap, if the defense brings a linebacker down inside the tackle box this run gets clogged quickly Identify Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells with the safety cheating to the trips side, this often leaves the backside cutback lane wide open Key the playside defensive end, if he crashes hard down the line the cutback should be the immediate answer instead of trying to bounce outside Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard with the zone action, aggressive user linebackers overrunning the play create easy cutback yardage Beware of interior nano blitzes or A gap pressure, since this scheme is vulnerable if the center loses his double team assignment before the backside guard can climb
Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, to keep defenses honest against the trips look
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box this play hits hard against the grain
Use the HB stretch vision cone and let the blocking develop, do not force it upfield too early since the cutback lane is the true home run window
Pair this with RPO Zone Dive and RPO Alert Mtn Dive from the same set so defenses cannot sit on run fits without opening up quick throws
Motion the trips receiver pre-snap if available to bait linebackers into flowing wrong and widen the cutback lane
Mix in Bounce Inside Zone and Inside Zone Split from this set to keep linebacker eyes guessing between frontside and backside zone runs
