HB Power O out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk is a gap scheme run play built to get downhill movement with a lead blocker punching through the hole. The diagram shows the HB aligned offset in the backfield taking a play-side path behind the guard pulling across the formation, with the offensive line executing down blocks and a puller sealing the edge for a power lane. This is not a man or zone beater since it is a pure run play, and the primary read is the play side A or B gap first, bouncing outside off the pulling guard's block if the alley is clogged.
Watch for a stacked box pre-snap with linebackers sitting tight to the line, this signals a run blitz designed to beat gap schemes. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash down hard the pulling guard can still seal them but the HB may need to bounce wider. User a linebacker or safety and key the guard pull, mirror his path downhill to blow up the play at the mesh point before the lead blocker gets a hat on him. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with an extra run defender in the box is the biggest counter to this play, since it removes the space Power O needs to develop. Against nano blitz packages that send an immediate A gap rusher, this play struggles unless the fullback or lead blocker peels off to pick him up cleanly.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or RPO instead.
Use your fullback or lead blocker as your primary user-controlled assignment to smash the first threat in the alley, this manually cleans up run blitzes the AI blocking misses.
Pair this with Mtn Y Lead Read Option or Boomerang Y Lead Read Option in the same set to keep defenders guessing on the mesh point and force linebackers to respect both gap and edge threats.
Sequence HB Power O early in a series, then come back with HB Slip Screen or RPO Alert Bubble Dive off similar formation shifts to punish overaggressive box defenders.
