Pre-snap, identify if a linebacker or slot defender is aligned to jump the flat, since an aggressive flat defender can undercut the swing before the HB gets going. Watch for man coverage triggers from the motion, if a defender mirrors the HB across the formation it confirms man and tells you to expect a trail defender chasing from behind. Post-snap, key any user controlled defender flowing hard to the flat, since a smart user can sit on this route and jump the swing for a big hit or pick if the QB throws it late. Look at linebacker run fits and blitz timing, a delayed blitz or nano blitz package can still get home even if the swing is designed to be a quick outlet, so know your protection numbers before calling this into heavy pressure looks. Against zone coverage, note whether the corner or safety rotates down to cut off the sideline, which forces the HB to cut the swing upfield into traffic instead of turning the corner.
