RPO Zone Dive out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk pairs an inside zone dive with a bubble screen read to the trips side, giving the quarterback a true run pass option based on the alignment of the second level defender. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme that flows to the play side while the slot receiver sits on a bubble route as the alert throw. This is a run first RPO that punishes light boxes and overaggressive flow defenders, with the primary read being the numbers advantage on the trips side before checking the dive lane.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker or slot defender pre-snap, if he is shaded outside expecting the bubble he opens up the dive lane Look for two high shells with soft corners, this alignment usually means the defense is conceding the run read so take the dive quickly Man coverage on the slot receiver with no underneath help is a green light for the bubble throw since there is no natural zone defender to jump it Beware defenses that show a mugged nickel or overload the play side box, this is meant to remove the dive option entirely and force the bubble into a bad numbers situation User controlled defenders sitting the flow defender in a shallow zone drop can bait the quarterback into a bubble throw when the run was actually there, trust your box count over the user disguise
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and count defenders inside the tackles versus your blockers to decide if the dive is already the better play
If the defense shows two high safeties with a light box, keep your eyes on the flow defender assigned to the bubble read and pull the ball if he crashes down
Use quick hot route adjustments sparingly since the base concept already accounts for both the run and the bubble, over adjusting can tip your intention
This play works best on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are still guessing between run and pass support
Sequence this with RPO Alert Bubble Dive and RPO Alert Mtn Dive so defenders see similar formations but have to respect different option triggers, then hit Mtn RPO Dive later in the series to keep linebackers frozen
