Quick Short Post is a trips-based quick game concept out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk that gets the ball out fast against pressure. The backside X runs a deep post as a clear-out or shot option while the trips side stacks a short post, a pivot out, and a flat route from the slot receivers underneath, with the TE running an out breaking route to the near sideline. Protection is a standard five man slide, and the primary read starts at the short post from the trips bunch before working down to the flat and TE out as the checkdowns.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify if the safety is aligned deep middle or shaded toward the trips, since a shaded safety opens up the backside post for a big play. Key the flat defender off the line of scrimmage, if he sinks with the TE out route the short post window stays open for the quarterback to hit. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the short post lane, a lurking linebacker or nickel defender jumping this route kills the primary read and forces a quick checkdown to the flat. Cover 3 with a hard robber underneath is the biggest threat to this concept since it clogs the short post and flat simultaneously, forcing the quarterback off his first read. Usage Tips

Fire this play out of shotgun trips when you diagnose Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells presnap since the short post settles in the seam window between the flat defender and the deep half safety.

Use the deep post on the backside as a hot alert against single high looks, since if the safety cheats toward the trips side the post can hit for an explosive gain.

Motion or shift the slot to check if the defense rotates into man coverage, and if you see man, prioritize the short post because it creates natural separation off the stacked release.

Pair this play with Bounce Slot Cross or Slants from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick outside breaking routes and this inside post concept.

Best used on early downs or third and short to medium since the routes settle quickly and give the quarterback a fast, high percentage throw against blitz heavy calls.
