Slot Fade is a trips-based dropback pass out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk that isolates the backside X receiver on a straight vertical fade for a one-on-one shot play. The trips side shows a corner route stacked outside, a seam climb from the inside slot, and an outside release swing/flat route to hold underneath defenders, while the backside X runs the lone fade against a single cornerback. Primary read is the backside X fade first if you have a favorable matchup or see single coverage with no safety help over the top, then work back to the trips side corner as the number two option against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the cornerback on the backside is playing off man or press man, since press corners with no safety help are the easiest fade beaters. Look at the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety rotating away from the backside numbers opens up the fade with no help over the top. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting on the seam route from the slot, since that lurk threat can bait a throw into a jumped route. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties shut this down quickly because the backside fade has no window to work with a safety sitting on top. Watch linebacker depth on the trips side, if they sink hard into the seam and corner combo, the underneath flat route becomes a checkdown outlet against soft zone coverage.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for single high safety or two high shells before the snap, since this play is designed to attack single coverage on the backside fade. If the defense shows two deep safeties, be ready to hot route the fade into a comeback or work the trips side corner and seam combo instead. Use this in red zone and jump ball situations where you have a size or speed mismatch on the backside X against a smaller corner. Pair this call with Bounce Slot Cross or Mtn Y Cross from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter combo routes before hitting them with the deep shot. Save this for third and long or two minute situations where a big play down the sideline is worth the risk of an incompletion.
