Breakdown

Bounce Inside Zone is a zone run play out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk with 11 personnel, showing three receivers stacked to one side and a single receiver isolated backside. The diagram shows the RB aligned next to the QB taking a zone handoff and reading a stretch path across the formation with the offensive line executing a zone blocking scheme that flows in the direction of the play call. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read is the frontside double team and playside linebacker fits before bouncing the run outside if the interior gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked box counts pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, the bounce lane will be there but the frontside double team needs to win first. Key the playside linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill without hesitation, bounce the run outside immediately rather than sticking to the called gap. Identify single high safety looks, since a Cover 3 or Cover 1 shell with the safety rotated away from the trips side leaves the alley open for the bounce. Beware of run blitzes from the weak side (the isolated receiver side), as a user-controlled defender crashing off that edge can blow up the cutback lane before it develops. If the defense shows a heavy front with the nose shaded to the playside gap, expect the initial read to be clogged and plan on the bounce path from the snap.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a passing personnel look to bait light boxes when defenses substitute for the trips formation to the weak side.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if both backers are sitting on the line of scrimmage expecting run blitz, consider audibling into a play-action shot from this same set instead.

Use the bounce path to attack overloaded interior fronts, since the design gives the RB a natural cutback lane if the playside gap is stuffed.

Pair this with RPO Zone Dive or RPO Alert Mtn Dive in the same set so the defense cannot key run fits without respecting the pass options off similar action.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your trips formation tendencies.
