Breakdown

Strong Flood is a three level flood concept run from the trips side of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk. The outermost trips receiver runs a deep flat corner route, the middle trips receiver runs a square in from the slot, and the inline TE releases vertically up the seam to occupy the deep safety, while the backside single receiver runs a comeback breaking outside near the sideline. The HB stays in to check release and slide protect before working out to the flat as a checkdown. This is a classic Cover 3 beater that floods one side of the field with three horizontal levels, and the primary read progression goes from the deep corner route to the intermediate in route to the flat check down underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 with a single high safety, since the deep corner route and the intermediate in route will stretch the cornerback and outside linebacker or slot defender vertically and horizontally. Watch the flat defender depth at the snap, if he sinks to protect the corner route the underneath in route and checkdown will be wide open in the void behind him. Key the free safety rotation post snap, if he cheats hard to the trips side flood the backside comeback becomes the best available throw. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or a two high shell that can double the deep corner route, and it can get exposed by a fast zone blitz that brings pressure off the edge before the flood routes fully develop, so watch for overload blitz looks pre snap and be ready to check into a quicker hot route.

Usage Tips

Attack single high shells with this play since the flood overloads the cornerback and flat defender on the trips side with three stacked reads. Use the TE seam route to hold the free safety in the middle of the field before working your eyes to the deep corner route on the perimeter. Hot route the backside comeback into a slant if you see man coverage to give yourself a quick rhythm throw against a corner playing outside leverage. This play shines on second and medium to long or on third and short to medium when defenses drop into zone shells expecting a shorter concept. Pair this with Mtn PA WR Zone Flood or Bounce PA Post Curls from the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick flood look and the deeper play action shot off similar formation and route stems.
