Mtn Y Cross is a motion-based man beater out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk that puts the Y receiver in motion pre-snap before sending him on a deep crossing route through the middle of the field. The trips side runs off coverage to clear space while the crosser works from one boundary to the other, creating natural separation against man defenders forced to trail through traffic. The primary read progression starts with the Y crosser working across the field, then works back to any underneath check down or the backside route if the linebacker or safety sinks to take away the cross.
Watch the defender assigned to the Y receiver during motion, if he mirrors across the formation it confirms man coverage and the crosser should win versus most base looks. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals an underneath robber technique designed to jump the crossing route, so be ready to check to the backside option. Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, since Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells leave the crosser vulnerable to a trailing linebacker but exposed to a deep half safety if the throw is late. Recognize Cover 2 or Tampa 2 shells by two deep safeties splitting the field, this coverage can squeeze the crossing route in the intermediate zone so the sit down adjustment becomes critical. Beware user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field, a smart defender will bait the quarterback into throwing the crosser into a jumped route, so scan the far hash for late-arriving defenders before committing to the throw.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the Y across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can trust the crosser to win.
Attack this play on second and medium or third and medium situations where the defense is likely to play man to man and blitz off the edge, since the crosser naturally works away from most nano blitz pressure angles.
If you diagnose zone coverage post motion, hot route the crosser to sit down in the soft spot behind linebackers rather than continuing all the way across, turning this into an effective zone beater against Tampa 2 or Cover 3 shells.
Pair Mtn Y Cross with Mtn WR Zone and Mtn PA WR Zone Flood in your play calling sequence, since the shared motion look and formation disguise makes it hard for defenders to key run versus pass or anticipate the crosser.
Against aggressive user blitzers, throw with anticipation as soon as the Y clears the first level of linebackers, because the ball needs to be out before the crosser reaches the opposite hash against a converging safety.
