Verticals Y Out is a trips-based four verticals concept out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read starting on the seam runners to attack the void between the safeties before working to the Y out against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Read the safeties at the snap: if they stay flat footed in a two deep shell, the seam routes will split them and create a big throwing window. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which signals Cover 3 and tells you to work the Y out into the flat. Track any user-controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, since a rangy user safety or linebacker sitting in the hole can jump the seam throws. Check linebacker depth pre-snap: shallow linebackers signal underneath zone coverage that will struggle to get depth on the seams, favoring your inside verticals. This play is vulnerable to press man coverage with underneath help, since man corners can disrupt the seam timing and take away the vertical stems before they develop.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to a single high shell, since this play is built to punish exactly those coverage shells.

If you see Cover 2, target the seam routes running up the hashes before the safeties can close the middle window.

Against Cover 3, work the Y out route to the flat area vacated by the rotating corner, since the deep thirds leave that zone soft.

Use hot routes to convert the backside X out into a comeback or hitch if you are facing an aggressive zone that jumps short routes.

Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross or Curls Combo in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both vertical stretches and shorter option routes, keeping linebackers honest.

Best called on early downs or in obvious passing situations where a Cover 2 shell is likely, since the seam shots create explosive play opportunities.
