Tackle Trap is a gap scheme run out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk with 11 personnel, sending three receivers into a trips look to the right while leaving the TE and a single WR to the backside. The offensive line pulls a backside guard or tackle across the formation to trap the first threat off the edge, letting the play side tackle and TE seal down inside while the RB reads the trap block before pressing into the hole. This is a power run design meant to punish overaggressive interior penetration, and the primary read is the RB reading the trap puller and the resulting crease created by the down blocks up front, not a pass progression.
Watch the defensive tackle or 3-technique alignment before the snap, since Tackle Trap is designed to bait an aggressive first step upfield that the puller can trap. Key the play side linebacker depth, if he is stacked tight to the line he can blow up the trap before the puller gets there. Look for defenses in odd fronts or those that stunt the defensive line, since a well timed line stunt can cross up the trap blocker and kill the play in the backfield. Post snap, identify whether the Mike linebacker flows hard to the play call or stays home, a disciplined backer sitting in the trap lane is the biggest threat to this run. This concept struggles against gap sound, disciplined fronts that do not bite on initial line movement, so avoid calling it into defenses that have shown consistent gap integrity on previous snaps.
Use Tackle Trap on early downs like first or second and short to medium distance when you expect the defense to sell out against outside runs or RPO bubble concepts from this same set.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for a 4i or 3-technique alignment on the play side since the trap block works best when there is a natural gap for the puller to attack.
If the defense shows a heavy box or an extra defender crashing down immediately, consider hot routing the backside WR into a quick out or checking to a perimeter run instead.
Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble Dive and RPO Alert Mtn Dive from the same set so the defense has to respect both the interior trap look and the quick perimeter throw off similar formation motion.
Run it in sequence after Inside Zone or Bounce Inside Zone to condition linebackers to fill fast, then hit them with the trap block when they overpursue the same gap.
