Breakdown

Mtn Y Lead Read Option is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk with 11 personnel, using pre-snap motion to shift the trips look and set the read side. The QB reads the play side defensive end off the mesh point with the H back leading through the hole, either handing off on inside zone or pulling to keep and attack the alley. This is a run-first design meant to exploit light boxes and overaggressive edge defenders rather than a man or zone passing beater.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end's first step, if he crashes inside toward the mesh point immediately, the QB should pull and keep to the edge every time. Check linebacker depth before the snap, stacked linebackers within four yards of the line signal run blitz packages designed to fill the read lane and beat this concept. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 over or under front, since 3-4 fronts with a stand-up edge defender give a cleaner read key for the quarterback. User-controlled defenders spying the mesh point or crashing down aggressively can blow this play up, so look for a defender not accounted for by the zone blocking scheme post-snap. Nickel and dime sub packages with lighter boxes are where this play thrives, but if the defense stays in its base personnel and stacks the box, expect this run to get gang tackled at the line.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense adjusts numbers into the box, since a base look with only six or seven defenders in the box is a green light to run this every time.

Key the play side defensive end before the snap, if he sits home or crashes hard down the middle every rep, alternate this with Boomerang Y Lead Read Option to keep the read unpredictable.

Run this on early downs or in short yardage, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are more likely to play base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages.

Pair this with Mtn RPO Dive or RPO Alert Mtn Dive in the same play call sequence so the defense has to respect both the give and the QB keep threat off similar formation motion.

If the linebackers are flowing hard to the motion side pre-snap, consider keeping the ball on the backside since the read defender is often left unblocked and vulnerable to a pull read.
