Breakdown

Bounce Slot Cross is a pass play out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk that uses a deep crosser as the primary route concept, with both outside receivers on the trips side running vertical clear-out routes up the sideline and seam to occupy deep defenders. The slot receiver runs the shallow cross underneath, breaking flat across the field into open space vacated by the vertical routes, while the running back stays in to help protect on a check release. Blocking is a standard pass protection look with the offensive line sliding to handle interior pressure. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working from the backside sideline route, then works to the underneath crosser as the window opens.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the trips side, since a two high shell suggests zone drops that could sit on the crosser. Watch the flow of the linebackers after the snap, as a hard flow toward the crosser's landmark signals a zone defender sitting in the throwing lane. Identify if the cornerback aligned over the slot receiver presses or bails, since a press look often means man coverage that the cross can exploit with a clean release. Look for a lurking user defender sitting in the middle of the field, as this play struggles against a rat in the hole style Cover 3 or Cover 4 look with a linebacker spying the crosser. Man blitzes with no deep help are the biggest weakness for this play, so if the defense shows an all-out blitz with no safety over the top, expect the crosser to be picked up quickly by a trailing defender.

Usage Tips

Use motion pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

This is a strong man beater because the crosser creates natural separation against man coverage trailing across the field, so call it on early downs when you expect Cover 1 or Cover 3 man matchups.

Hot route the running back into a quick flare if you see a blitz look, since the check release protection can be beaten by extra rushers off the edge.

Pair this play with Dig Cross or Mtn Y Cross in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between different crossing route depths and angles.

Best used on second and medium or third and short situations where the underneath crosser can pick up positive yardage quickly against a soft zone shell.
