RPO Glance Bubble out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk pairs an inside zone run look with a two-man pass option to the trips side. The backside X runs a glance route breaking hard away from the run flow while the trips receivers stack a bubble screen underneath and a corner or streak vertical from the slot, giving the QB a run/pass key based on the read defender near the box. This is an RPO built to attack light boxes and off coverage, and the primary read progression is run key first (numbers in the box), then glance versus man pressure, then bubble as the checkdown if the flat defender bites on the run fake.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alignment of the slot cornerback pre-snap since a tight press look signals they are keying the bubble and will jump it immediately. If the free safety is rotating late to the trips side post-snap, expect the glance window to close fast, so any hesitation on that throw gets picked. User the overhang or nickel defender manually to sit on the bubble route, this is the single biggest counter to this concept in competitive play. Man coverage on the backside X with no safety help over the top is when the glance route wins most consistently, look for single high shells. Blitzes that send extra rushers off the edge away from the run action can beat this play if the QB does not get the ball out pre-snap or immediately at the snap, since the RPO read window closes quickly under pressure.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, key the glance route immediately since that usually means man coverage on the backside X.
If the slot corner or overhang defender crashes down on the run action, throw the bubble quickly since the numbers advantage in space is your best matchup.
Use hot routes to convert the bubble receiver into a quick out if you are facing a hard flat squeeze from a Cover 3 sky defender.
Call this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage since the run threat keeps linebackers honest and sets up the RPO conflict.
Sequence this with RPO Thunder Bubble or RPO Alert Bubble Dive later in a drive so the defense has to respect both the glance shot and the give, forcing hesitation from second level defenders.
