Breakdown

Counter Y is a power run concept out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk that pulls the backside linemen to lead the HB through the hole with a counter step, using the TE and playside tackle to seal the edge while the backside guard and tackle wrap around to kick out the first threat off the edge. The trips side stays vacant of route responsibility in this look, letting the offense sell run action while stacking blockers to the point of attack. This is a run play designed to attack gap exchanges and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read being the puller's block: bounce it outside if the kickout seals the edge defender, or cut it up inside if the LB flows too far outside.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment. Stacked or crashing linebackers who diagnose counter quickly can blow this up before the pullers get set. Look at the defensive line technique. A shaded nose or a 3 technique that reads and holds the point can clog the counter lane and force a negative play. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they sit and read instead of crashing down, the kickout blocker will have a tougher angle and the ball carrier needs to cut it back inside. User-controlled linebackers who spy the mesh point or shoot the gap immediately are the biggest threat, since they can beat the pulling linemen to the hole before blocks are set. Watch for defenses that bring an extra hat into the box on early downs or show a Bear front, since heavy fronts with quick flowing backers are built to stop counter action.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense guessing between run and pass out of trips formations.

Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, counter run away from overloaded fronts and consider a play-action shot instead.

Watch for slanting defensive lines and fast flowing linebackers, since counter's misdirection is designed to freeze linebackers who key the initial step and overrun the play.

Pair Counter Y with play-action shots like Boomerang PA Portland or Mtn PA Portland from the same set so the counter run action sets up explosive shot plays later in the drive.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap look to identify if the defense is keying run based on personnel, and if you see heavy safety rotation toward the box, be ready to bail to an RPO like RPO Alert Bubble Dive instead.
