Breakdown
X Dagger lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk with the X receiver running a deep vertical seam up the middle of the field while the inside receiver clears the intermediate zone on a corner route that breaks outside toward the sideline, forming the classic dagger combo that stacks a seam route under a clear out. To the boundary side the outside receiver runs a deep in route that sits at the second level while the TE or attached receiver runs an under route out toward the sideline, giving the quarterback a shallow crossing option if the deep stuff is covered. The single receiver to the far side runs a dig style route working back across the middle as a late developing answer. This is a zone beater and man beater combo play, with the primary read starting on the deep seam route against the middle of the field, working to the corner breaking route for a big shot against Cover 2, and checking down to the under route or dig if the safety stays deep.
Defensive Reads
Watch the safety alignment presnap, a two high shell with corners playing off is a green light for the corner route sitting behind the flat defender and in front of the deep safety. If the defense shows single high Cover 1 or Cover 3, key the deep safety's leverage on the seam route, if he sucks down on shorter routes the seam will split the coverage for a big play. Track the underneath linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the under route breaking outside, if he sinks with the corner route the flare or under route to that side opens up. Beware of a user controlled deep defender lurking the seam route, disciplined Madden opponents will sit on this exact route and jump the throw, so hesitate and look off before firing that pass. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets shredded by the corner route beating a trail defender, but tight man coverage with a rat linebacker spying the middle of the field can disrupt the seam read and force you to the checkdown quickly.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify whether the safeties are showing a two high shell or single high look before the snap since this concept punishes Cover 2 and Cover 3 hard.
Start your read on the seam route running up the middle, if the safety bites on it, immediately move to the corner route breaking outside for the explosive gain.
Against Cover 2 the corner route sits in the honey hole behind the corner and in front of the safety, drop a dime there instead of forcing the seam.
Use the under route breaking to the sideline as your answer versus zone drops or when the deep routes are blanketed, it is a safe checkdown to move the chains.
Pair this play with Four Verticals and PA Dagger in the same set to keep the defense honest on seam and post shots, then mix in RPO Peek Slant or Quick Slants to slow down aggressive linebacker rotation before coming back to X Dagger for the deep shot.
