X Dagger is the classic dagger concept run from Spread Y-Slot Wk out of Shotgun 11 personnel. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep dig sitting behind the vertical clear-out from the inner slot, while the underneath receiver runs a shallow drag crossing the field. On the right side, the two remaining receivers run a corner route stacked over a pivot/curl, giving a full field high low read. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack the vacated middle of the field, with the primary read progression going from the deep dig to the drag underneath, and the corner/pivot combo as the boundary side answer.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks too deep on the vertical threat the drag route will be wide open underneath Key the free safety in two high shells, if he bites on the corner route the dig will have a clean throwing lane behind him Cover 3 defenses with a hard flat defender leave the drag route open immediately, look to exploit this on early downs Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beat easily by the dig, since the vertical clear out forces the defender to trail and lose leverage Beware of a disguised Cover 4 or match quarters look, since it can bracket both the dig and the corner route and force you to check down to the drag

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since this concept punishes both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells that vacate the intermediate middle

If you see Cover 3 with a deep middle defender, throw the dig behind the linebackers as soon as the vertical clears out the underneath zone defender

Against Cover 2, work the dig into the seam between the two deep safeties before the corner route clears the sideline defender

Use the drag route as your checkdown against man coverage or when the pass rush forces an early throw, especially on third and medium situations

Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Dagger from the same set to keep defenders honest on the vertical stem before hitting them with the shorter Dagger crossers
