Breakdown

Spot Y Cross out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk lines up with trips to one side and a backside outlet. The two outside receivers on the trips side run a deep clearout up the numbers and a corner route that breaks toward the sideline, while the inside slot runs a quick hitch to the flat that forms the low spot of the spot concept. The Y (tight end) is the namesake route, releasing across the formation on a shallow drag to the opposite sideline, and the backside receiver runs a deep dig back across the field, giving this play both man beating and zone beating answers. Primary read starts with the flat hitch versus zone or the Y drag versus man, then works to the corner route and finally the deep crosser on the backside if the underneath windows are closed.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap. If he sits on the hitch route the corner behind him is open, and if he bails to the corner the hitch is a free completion underneath. Track the middle linebacker or hook defender in zone looks, since a slow drop leaves the Y drag wide open running across the formation. Against man coverage, look for a linebacker or slower defender matched on the Y, that leverage mismatch is the primary man beater trigger. Cover 2 with squatting corners is the toughest shell for this concept since it clogs the flat and hitch read, forcing you to hold the ball for the deeper corner or backside dig. Blitz-heavy fronts with a lurking linebacker in the shallow zone can jump the Y drag route, so check for a defender sitting in the middle of the field before committing to that read.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre-snap. If the safety rotates down showing Cover 3 or Cover 4, key the hitch to corner combo on the trips side since the flat defender cannot cover both the hitch and the corner. If you see press man or a single high safety with linebackers walked up, look immediately for the Y drag crossing away from pressure since it beats man coverage with natural leverage. Use this on second and medium to third and short where the underneath spot combo alone can move the sticks. Motion the backside receiver pre-snap to confirm man versus zone before the snap. Pair this with Double Cross and Inside Cross from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the shallow drag concept, and mix in Four Verticals or Dagger to punish safeties who start creeping down to take away the spot combo.
