Spot Y Cross lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk with 11 personnel and gives you a classic Spot concept married to a deep crosser from the backside. The playside runs the traditional Spot combo: the outer receiver clears vertically up the seam, the slot runs a quick corner/flag route breaking outside toward the sideline, and the inside receiver settles in the flat as the hitch/spot piece near the line. On the backside, the far receiver runs a deep dig across the field while the TE releases into a short drag underneath, and the running back stays in as a check release option out of the backfield. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the Spot concept to flood the strong side zones while the Y Cross gives you a natural answer against man coverage on the opposite side. Primary read progression starts with the flat to corner read on the Spot side, then works to the deep crosser (Y Cross) if the underneath zones or man defenders are occupied.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender pre-snap since a soft or late-rotating flat defender signals Cover 3, which this Spot concept is designed to exploit with the corner and hitch combo. Watch for a linebacker sitting in the shallow zone or spying the crosser, since a well-timed user lurk can jump the Y Cross route and turn it into a turnover. If the cornerback on the crosser side presses at the line with no safety help, expect man coverage, meaning the Y Cross should win against most linebackers or slower corners in trail technique. Identify blitz packages by checking the box count before the snap, since a six or seven man blitz will require you to get the ball out fast on the flat or hitch rather than waiting on the deeper cross. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the corner route and crosser, so be ready to check down to the running back or hitch route underneath if the top of the defense stays intact.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick peek at the safety alignment to determine if you are facing single high or two high, since Spot concepts thrive against Cover 3 and Cover 1 with soft flat defenders.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, prioritize the Y Cross immediately since it creates natural separation against trailing defenders on the crossing route.

Hot route the running back into a flat release if the defense shows blitz pressure, giving you a checkdown valve against nano blitzes or overload fronts.

This play pairs extremely well with Double Cross and H Cross in the same set since all three attack similar crossing concepts, keeping the defense guessing on which crosser is the primary read.

Best used on second and medium to third and long situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells, letting the Spot concept pick apart the flat and corner zones underneath.
