Breakdown
Four Verticals out of Spread Y-Slot Wk sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with the two outside receivers running straight seams up the numbers and the two slot receivers (including the Y) splitting the middle of the field on vertical stems. The running back stays in to check the middle of the field with a short vertical release, giving the quarterback a fifth option if the four verts are blanketed underneath. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, attacking the deep middle void between the safeties and stressing zone defenders who cannot cover four vertical stems with only two or three deep defenders, with the primary read starting on the inside seam (Y or slot) working to the numbers-based outside verts.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth and width pre-snap, if both safeties are shallow or cheating toward the box this play has an easy explosive play window over the top. Watch for a single high safety shading toward one side of the field, that leverage tells you which seam has more room to work with less risk of a lurking user defender. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers and nickel defenders for a zone drop that turns into a robber technique jumping the inside seam or the running back's check route. Man coverage with no help over the top is the biggest bust for this play, so if you see man alignment pre-snap be ready to throw with anticipation before the safety can rotate over. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers can be dangerous since the quarterback has no quick outlet besides the running back check route, so identify overload pressure and get the ball out on time or use max protect adjustments.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment because this play is designed to exploit the seam between safeties in Cover 3 or the middle void in Cover 2.
If you see Cover 2, target the inside seam runner running the post-seam window right at 15 to 20 yards before the safeties can close.
Against Cover 3, work the far hash seam away from the single high safety's leverage and lead him with your eyes to open the throwing lane.
Use hot routes to convert one of the inside verts into a hitch or option route if you diagnose zone coverage with underneath robbers sitting in the throwing lanes.
Pair this play with Dagger or Curl Combo in the same set to keep defenses guessing between vertical stress and shorter combo routes on early downs, then call Four Verticals on second or third and long once you have baited the safeties into cheating up.
