PA Dagger is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk that pairs a deep dig with a vertical clear-out route on the play side, while the backside runs a post and the near slot works a deep out at the boundary. The play-action fake and the outside receiver's clear-out route hold the deep safety and corner, opening the dig sitting down in the intermediate middle window behind the linebackers. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression starting on the dig (the classic dagger route), then working to the backside post if the middle safety jumps the dig, and using the deep out and post as late checkdowns against soft zone coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment. A lone deep safety signals Cover 3, which is where the dig route hits hardest between the hook and curl zones. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If linebackers bite hard on the run fake, the dig window opens instantly for an easy completion. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or the user defender flowing to the deep middle. If he sits on the dig, look to the backside post for the window created by his displacement. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties who can rob the dig at its break point, since the clear-out route does not stress those coverages enough. Watch for a delayed inside blitz through the A gap. Since the play-action fake slows down protection reads, a hard closing blitzer can force a quick check to the deep out or an early throwaway.
Usage Tips
Use play-action heavy on early downs, second and short or first and ten, to keep the run fake honest and freeze linebackers before they can sink into the dig window.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties. Against Cover 3 the dig sits perfectly between the hook and flat zones. Against Cover 2 the clear-out route occupies both safeties and opens the same middle window.
If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the deep out into a slant or speed out to beat man leverage quicker, since the dig can get clogged by an underneath defender in man.
Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Comebacks in the same set to keep defenses honest on shell recognition, since both plays start with similar play-action footwork but attack different levels.
Avoid calling this on third and long against zone-heavy defenses that sit their linebackers deep, since the dig has to sit down at a depth that can bump into shallow zone drops if the QB holds it too long.
