PA Dagger runs the classic dagger combo out of the left side with a seam runner clearing vertically and a deep dig sitting behind it at the intermediate level, while the play fakes the run to hold the linebackers. On the right side the TE runs a corner route from the slot alignment and the outside WR runs an out and up, giving you a dual dagger look on both sides of the field. The backfield stays clean off the fake for a big play-action window, and the primary read progression starts with the deep seam to hold the safety, then works down to the dig running underneath it before checking the corner route on the backside.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre snap since this concept is designed to attack the seam between them before the safety can rotate down. Watch the middle linebacker depth after the play action fake, if he bites hard on the run the dig route will have a wide open throwing lane. Key the flat defender or curl to flat player on the right side, if he widens with the out and up route the corner route from the TE will have room to sit down. Beware a Cover 4 shell with quarters rules, the seam runner will get matched by a safety and the dig can get picked off by an underneath zone linebacker sinking into the throwing lane. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge since the play action mesh point can be vulnerable if the offensive line does not get enough depth on their pass protection drops.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safeties pre snap since this play is built as a Cover 2 beater with the seam route occupying the deep safety and the dig sitting in the window behind the linebackers. Use play action on early downs or in run heavy personnel counts to freeze the second and third level defenders and buy the dig time to break open. Hot route the corner route to a comeback if you see a corner playing off and squatting on the sideline route. Pair this call with HB Off Tackle or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake and bites harder on the play action. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety, prioritize the dig over the seam since the seam runner will likely run into the deep third defender.
