RPO Power Peek is a run pass option built off a Power gap scheme run, giving the quarterback a pre snap and post snap decision based on the read defender. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard for Power while the quarterback peeks at a bubble or slant read from the slot alignment. This is an RPO first and foremost, so the read progression starts with the alley or overhang defender: if that defender crashes down on the run fit, the quarterback pulls and throws the peek route, and if he sits or bails, the quarterback hands off to Power.

Defensive Reads

Watch the overhang or slot defender pre snap, if he is aligned inside the slot receiver with no help behind him, expect him to be the run fit key. Post snap, if that defender steps up into the box on the mesh read, throw the peek immediately before he can recover. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with an aggressive alley player crashing down get exploited hardest since the peek route sits right in the vacated space. Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with the slot corner sitting flat instead of crashing tend to shut down the pass option, so hand it off to Power in those looks. Beware of a disguised nano blitz from the second level, if the linebacker shows blitz then bails into the peek throwing lane, the quarterback needs to reset to the run read instead of forcing the throw.

Usage Tips

Identify the overhang defender before the snap since he is the true key for this RPO, not the deep safeties.

Use this on early downs and short yardage like 2nd and 3 or 3rd and 2 where defenses expect a run fit that opens the peek throw.

If the defense shows a heavy box with the slot corner pressed, hot route the peek receiver to a quick out to beat aggressive man leverage.

Pair this call with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek in the same drive to keep the alley defender guessing between slant and peek concepts off similar formation looks.

Against user controlled linebackers who key the mesh point, use play action shots like PA Read or PA Dagger later in the sequence once they start crashing hard on this RPO look.
