Breakdown

Double Post attacks from Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk with two receivers stacking vertical post routes on the right side, one breaking in shallow at the top of his stem and the other running a deeper post behind him for a natural pick/clear concept. On the left side the outside receiver runs a deep vertical clear route while the backfield player releases into a quick out to the flat, giving a checkdown against a blitz. The primary read progression starts with the deep post from the outside slot receiver, works to the shallower post underneath it, and finishes with the flat route as a built in blitz beater, making this a strong Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater against two high safety shells.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap identify whether the safeties are aligned in a two high shell, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 are the shells this play is designed to exploit with the double post stack. Watch the flat defender on the backfield out route side, if he widens too far the underneath post window opens up for a big gain. Post snap key the safety over the double post stack, if he stays deep and does not commit to either post the quarterback should hold and let the routes develop before delivering the deep shot. Beware of Cover 3 with a hard sink from the deep third defender, since he can sit on the deeper post and jump the throw if the quarterback rushes it. User controlled defenders dropping into a lurk position between the two posts can undercut the shallower route, so throw with anticipation or work the flat route instead when you see a user spying that window.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safeties pre snap since this play is built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells where the post routes split the safeties apart. If the corner is playing off man coverage on the double post side, throw the deeper post as soon as your receiver clears the underneath post runner. Use the flat route as your outlet against Cover 3 sink or when the defense shows blitz off the edge, since it gets the ball out fast before pressure arrives. Pair this play with Curl Combo or Hitch Seam in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between shorter zone beaters and this deep shot play. Best called on second or third and medium to long when you need to punish a defense sitting in two high zone shells.
