Breakdown

Corner Strike is a two-high beater out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk that isolates both outside receivers on vertical breaking routes. To the right, the outside WR runs a corner route that stems upfield before breaking to the sideline, while the slot receiver underneath runs a flat/out route to clear space and hold the flat defender. On the left side, the outside WR runs a deep comeback style route back toward the sideline off a vertical stem, with the inside receiver running a shallow drag underneath to occupy linebackers. The primary read starts with the right side corner route against single high or two high shells, and progresses to the backside comeback if the corner is taken away by a deep half safety or press corner jumping the route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety alignment: two safeties deep signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which the corner route attacks in the seam between the corner and safety. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks or widens with the underneath flat route, the corner route window opens up over the top for an easy pitch and catch. On the backside, key the cornerback's leverage, if he is playing tight man or aggressive off coverage, the comeback route wins on the break since he has to turn his hips to run with the vertical stem first. Post-snap, look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut the corner route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a deep third defender sitting in the corner's landing zone, so if you see single high shells with the corner staying deep, check to the comeback or flat conversion instead.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high or rotating to single high, since the corner route to the trips or slot side wins big against Cover 2 and Cover 4 when the corner defender bites on the underneath flat route.

Use the flat route on the right as a hot route conversion to a flat or slant if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, giving you an easy underneath completion against blitz looks.

On the backside, trust the comeback route against aggressive corners playing off man or zone drops that click and close, since the receiver breaks back to the ball right into the void the defender vacates.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or Dagger in the same set to condition the defense into expecting vertical stress, then dial up Corner Strike when you see the safety start cheating toward the trips or slot side.

Best used on second or third and medium to long, since the corner route needs a full route stem to develop and the comeback route benefits from defenders playing off coverage in longer yardage situations.
