Mtn Buck Sweep(y Stops) is a run play out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk that pairs the outside sweep action with a Y Stops adjustment on the tight end, giving you a built in check if the defense crashes down on the run fit. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard and gets the offensive line flowing laterally to seal the edge, so your primary read as the ball carrier is to press the sweep hole and let the pulling linemen create the crease before deciding to bounce outside or cut back inside. Since this is fundamentally a run play with a route adjustment as an outlet, your progression is: check the box count pre-snap, commit to the sweep track at the snap, and only bail to the Y Stops throw if the defense sells out with extra run defenders before the snap.
Watch for the play side defensive end and outside linebacker crashing down hard, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home can blow up the pulling guard's angle and stop the sweep before it develops Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety usually means less run support underneath which favors the sweep hitting to the perimeter If the defense shows an overloaded box with eight or more defenders, bail immediately into the Y Stops route since the numbers are not in your favor to run User controlled linebackers who sit and read the mesh point rather than crashing gaps are the toughest defenders to beat with this concept, since they can flow with the pulling lineman and clean up the cutback lane Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with soft outside corners are vulnerable to the sweep bouncing outside, while aggressive man coverage with blitzing linebackers opens up the Y Stops as a quick answer against pressure
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation
If you see two safeties rotate down into the box or a linebacker walk up to the line pre-snap, that is your cue to hot route the TE into Y Stops as a quick outlet instead of handing off into a loaded box
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel and light boxes, since a heavy box negates the sweep's blocking angles
Pair this with Mtn HB Counter and Mtn Inside Zone Split in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on run direction, since all three plays start with similar shotgun action but attack different gaps
Sequence Mtn Buck Sweep(y Stops) with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek out of the same formation so the defense cannot key on run versus pass tendencies from your alignment
Use the sweep's blocking flow as a setup for Mtn PA Cross later in the game once defenders start flowing hard to the edge on run fakes
