Curl Outs from Spread Y-Slot Wk aligns two receivers to the left and a tighter TE/WR duo to the right in Shotgun 11 personnel. To the left, the outside WR runs an out that breaks hard to the sideline, the slot receiver sits down on a curl at the sticks, and the inside receiver runs a deep out that clears the flat behind the two shorter routes, creating a natural triangle stretch on any zone defender. To the right, the TE and second WR run a simple vertical seam into a shallow out combo, giving the quarterback a quick outlet away from the trips side. This is a zone beater built to attack curl/flat defenders with high low leverage. The primary read starts with the curl from inside out, then the deep out over the top, working to the backside out route if the coverage rotates hard to the trips concept.
Watch the flat defender at the snap since he has to choose between the underneath out and sinking under the curl, and whichever one he leaves open is your first read. Check safety depth pre-snap because two high shells with soft corners invite the curl to sit down in the window, while single high safeties often mean the corner has more freedom to jump the out route. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow curl to flat area, especially in nano blitz situations where the defense drops an extra body into that zone to squeez the throwing window. Man coverage with an overhang blitzer off the edge is the biggest threat to this concept since it collapses the pocket before the curl or deep out has time to develop, so identify blitz alignment before the snap and be ready to check into a quicker route. If the linebackers show heavy depth and the corners play off, the deep out to the far side and the TE seam combo become the most efficient answers since the underneath defenders are playing too far off to close throwing lanes in time.
Use pre-snap motion or a peek at the slot corner depth to identify if you are facing zone or man coverage before the snap. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, key on the flat defender since the curl sits right in his passing lane and the deep out will be open behind him if he jumps the curl. Against man coverage, hot route the backside TE into a quick option or drag to give yourself an instant answer if the trips side gets jammed at the line. This play shines on third and medium to third and long since the curl and deep out both settle around the sticks, giving multiple answers for the first down. Pair this with Curl Combo or Slot Outs in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the same flat/curl read snap after snap, then mix in Double Slants or Quick Slants to punish aggressive underneath jumps.
