Breakdown

Mtn RPO Zone Peek is a run-pass option out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk with 11 personnel. The offensive line and HB run an inside zone scheme to the left while the backside receiver releases vertically off the zone action, giving the quarterback a peek read against overaggressive linebackers. The underneath receiver runs a short flat/drag route as an outlet, making this a true RPO that punishes both light boxes (hand off zone) and man coverage biting on run action (throw the peek).

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebacker: if he steps up hard to fill the zone run gap, that confirms the QB will pull and throw the peek behind him. Watch the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shading toward the run side signals man coverage on the outside, which favors the peek route beating a corner turned to run support. Zone shells that keep both safeties deep and linebackers at their normal depth take away the peek window and force the offense into the actual handoff, so sell run fits hard. User the flat defender or nickel corner to jump the underneath flat route since that's the checkdown the QB defaults to when the peek isn't open. Nano blitzes and interior line stunts can beat the zone blocking before the QB has time to read the peek, so disguise pressure up front on early downs to force a bad decision.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the play side has a numbers advantage for the zone run before the ball is even snapped.

If the safety cheats down into the box or a linebacker creeps toward the line, pull the ball and throw the peek route immediately for an explosive gain.

Hot route the flat receiver into a deeper option route against zone shells that sit soft, since the quick flat won't beat a defender sitting at five yards.

Use this on early downs (1st and 2nd) when defenses are still guessing run or pass, then pair it with Mtn Buck Sweep or HB Off Tackle to keep defenders honest on the same zone action.

Sequence this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Read Bubble later in a drive so defenders can't sit on one specific RPO key without opening up a different throw.
