Read Option is a zone run play out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk with the QB and HB in a crisscross mesh alignment behind a five man offensive line. The diagram shows no route concepts, just the exchange point where the QB reads the play side defensive end to decide between handing off or pulling and keeping the ball himself. This is a true option run designed to attack overpursuing defensive lines, with the primary read being the unblocked edge defender at the mesh point.
Spy or contain the QB with the play side end and force him to give every time instead of letting him read leverage freely. Play a hard crash technique with the defensive end aimed directly at the HB mesh point to eliminate the option read before it develops. Watch for defenses stacking the box with extra linebackers, since that alignment signals they expect the run and will not respect the keep. Beware user controlled defensive ends baiting the QB by faking outside contain then diving inside, which can freeze the read and blow up both options. Zone heavy shells with linebackers flowing hard to the mesh point shut this down quickly, so man coverage with disciplined edge players is the tougher matchup for the offense.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the defensive end into jumping upfield before the snap so you can key his leverage immediately at the mesh point.
Run this from balanced personnel looks so the defense cannot key run based on formation alone, and mix it in on early downs to keep linebackers honest.
If the play side end sits home and does not commit, pull the ball and attack the alley yourself since most defenders in this scheme are programmed to crash the mesh.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Read Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the give and the perimeter throw off similar formation shifts.
Best used on second and short or first and ten when defenses are still playing base fronts instead of dedicated run blitz packages.
