Defensive Reads

Blitz heavy packages with linebackers crashing downhill actually help the offense here because the delayed handoff lets those defenders run past the play, so look for exotic pressure calls before the snap. Man coverage with linebackers locked onto the RB out of the backfield is the counter, if you see man match principles on the HB before the snap expect this play to get squeezed. Track safety depth, a single high safety who bites on the play fake or holds too long at the snap opens up cutback lanes to either side of the formation.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in third and medium situations when the defense has shown blitz tendencies on previous snaps since the delayed action punishes overpursuing linebackers and edge rushers. Check the pre-snap alignment for stacked boxes or walked up linebackers, if the defense is sitting soft in a two high shell with light numbers inside this draw hits even harder. Do not hot route the receivers, their job is to occupy zone defenders and man corners downfield so the middle stays clean, adjusting their routes removes the natural hesitation this play creates in linebackers. Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the delayed run action out of an identical formation. Use it as a changeup after calling Inside Zone or HB Counter a few times, the draw look mimics pass protection long enough to freeze second level defenders who have started keying run fits.
