This is a pure run play with no route concepts attached, and the primary read is the HB pressing the line of scrimmage to read the play side double team and the edge defender before deciding to hit the hole downhill or bounce it outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the play side defensive end squeezing hard down the line, which tells the HB to bounce it outside the kickout block instead of forcing it up inside. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with a walked up strong safety can bracket the off tackle run since the extra body near the box removes the natural cutback lane. Overload blitzes from the play side edge with a linebacker crashing downhill kill this run before the mesh point if the offensive line is not gap sound. Look for the weak safety rotating down pre-snap, which signals run support and should push the ball carrier to find the cutback lane away from the flow. User controlled defenders spying the RPO tag will jump the mesh point early, so if the defense keys run flow instantly on this look it is time to fake into a play-action shot instead.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the four receiver spread look pulls extra defenders out wide.

Use this as a base run to set up RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek later in the drive since the formation and initial mesh point look identical, forcing linebackers to hesitate.

Attack odd fronts or 4-3 under fronts where the play side tackle can climb to a linebacker instead of getting doubled by a defensive tackle and end.

Best called on first and second down in normal distance since the single back shotgun run tips less obviously than under center runs but still needs manageable yardage to stay effective.

Pair with HB Mid Draw and Inside Zone in the same set to keep linebacker run fits guessing while still hitting the same general launch point.
