The offensive line and TE execute down blocks and combo blocks to seal the edge, with the fullback path (represented by the red run arrow) working the HB toward the tackle box gap and outside for a downhill hit off the tackle's outside shoulder. This is a base run play with no route combos attached, designed to attack gap integrity rather than beat coverage, so the primary read is the play side double team and the leverage of the edge defender to decide between hitting the crease inside or bouncing it outside.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end and OLB depth before the snap, a wide alignment with outside contain leaves the off tackle crease open. Stacked or bear fronts with extra defenders in the box are the primary threat, they can outnumber the blocking scheme and blow up the play before it develops. Look for safeties cheating down into the box post-snap, that signals a run blitz or crash call meant to beat this exact gap scheme. User-controlled defensive ends who squeeze hard down the line can force the HB to cut back into pursuit, so check for backside pursuit angles. Nickel or dime packages with lighter boxes due to the spread alignment are where this play hits hardest, since there are fewer bodies to fill the alley.
Usage Tips
Use this out of a spread personnel look to bait defenses into light boxes since the four wide receivers force base or nickel personnel that cannot always match the run fit.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the defensive end and outside linebacker on the play side, if they are crashing hard inside there is room to bounce this outside the tackle.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run without opening up quick throws against overaggressive linebackers.
Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are still guessing between run and pass out of this spread formation.
Sequence this with HB Counter and Inside Zone to keep the front guessing on gap direction while using the same personnel and alignment.
