PA Bubble Y Over is a play-action passing concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk with 11 personnel. Off the play fake, the two outside receivers run vertical breaking routes into corner routes toward the boundary while the Y (slot) runs the deep over route crossing the field from the opposite side, and the backside receiver runs a quick bubble/flare route underneath as the checkdown. The primary progression starts with the Y over route working across the middle since it stresses linebackers and creates natural separation against man coverage, then works to the two corner routes on the boundary if the middle is clogged, with the bubble route as the built-in safety valve against a hard blitz.
Defensive Reads
Read the linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake, the Y over route will be wide open behind them. Identify single high safety shells pre-snap since this play is designed to exploit the void left by a safety cheating toward the box against run action. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle or lurking in the shallow crossing lanes, they can jump the Y over route if the quarterback holds it too long. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, the two boundary corner routes can be squeezed by cornerbacks sinking deep, so be ready to check down to the bubble route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play is most vulnerable defensively, since the Y over route will consistently separate against trailing defenders.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or in 2nd and medium situations where defenses expect run and bite on the play-action fake.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap, if you see single high safety, the Y over route will have room to work against man or zone coverage underneath.
Against aggressive blitz teams, hot route the bubble route to a quick flat or keep it as is to give yourself an instant answer against pressure.
Pair this play with Inside Zone or HB Off Tackle earlier in a drive to sell the run fake and make the play-action element more believable to the defense.
In man coverage, prioritize the Y over route since it naturally picks up separation crossing the field, and combine this call with Double Cross or Inside Cross later in the sequence to keep linebackers guessing on crossing routes.
