PA Bubble Y Over is a play-action pass out of Shotgun 11 personnel that sells a bubble screen fake to the boundary while attacking the middle and deep zones with an over concept. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical (red route) as a decoy or shot play option, while the two inside routes work a corner route and a deep crosser breaking over the top of the defense, with the outside receiver on that side running a corner as well. The primary read progression starts with the Y over route working across the middle against zone drops, then climbs to the corner routes on either side if the linebackers sink or the safety bites on the play-action, making this an effective zone beater against split safety shells.

Defensive Reads

Identify the middle linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, since a fast trigger on the bubble fake means he will crash the flat and open the throwing lane for the Y over route. Watch the deep safety depth before the snap, if he sits shallow expecting run support the corner routes on either side have single coverage over the top. Beware defenses running Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Palm, since these shells keep a flat defender home and a deep defender sinking under the corner route, which can bait a bad throw. Post-snap, track any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, as he can jump the Y over route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. If the defense shows man coverage with a blitz look, the play-action fake can freeze a linebacker just long enough for the over route to separate before the pass rush arrives.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs to keep defenses honest against your run game since the bubble fake pulls linebackers up and opens the middle for the Y over route.

Check pre-snap for two high safeties, since the over route can sit in the soft spot between zone drops if the defense plays Cover 2 or Cover 4.

If you see man coverage indicators like a single high safety with press corners, hot route the Y over into a quick out or option route to beat man leverage instead of forcing it into traffic.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Read Bubble earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the bubble action, which sets up the play-action shot on the corner routes later in the drive.

Look to throw the corner route outside the numbers when the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, since the deep zone behind it will be vacated.
