Breakdown

Cake Read Option lines up in Shotgun out of Spread Y-Slot Wk personnel (11) with the QB and HB in the backfield mesh point shown crossing right at the snap. The diagram shows a zone read blocking scheme up front with the offensive line stepping in unison to one side while the QB reads the backside edge defender to decide between handing off or pulling and keeping. This is a pure run play (zone read option), not a pass concept, and the primary read progression is simply the QB keying the unblocked edge defender: give if he crashes down the line, pull and run if he stays wide or sits.

Defensive Reads

Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on every snap you can jump the QB keep by spying with a linebacker. Key the play side linebacker depth, if he is sitting too shallow he will get sealed on the zone track and open a cutback lane for the HB. User the backside contain defender yourself in competitive play since AI teammates will frequently misplay the mesh point and give up the keep too easily. Stack the box with an extra defender via pre-snap adjustment against Shotgun 11 personnel to remove the numbers advantage this play relies on. Look for scrape exchange linebacker packages or edge defenders trained to string the play out, this forces a longer developing keep read that gives the defense time to rally.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call this against light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the play lives on gap integrity up front.

Identify whether the backside defensive end is a scrape exchange defender or a true crasher during your pre-snap motion or hot route check, this determines your read plan before the snap even happens.

Use the QB contain keep aggressively against defenses that squeeze the dive every single time, since user players will often abandon contain to chase the HB.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek in the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick pass, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

Save Cake Read Option for early down situations like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime looks that clog the read.
