This is a downhill run play meant to attack light boxes and beats defenses that spread out in nickel or dime personnel with fewer defenders in the run fit. The primary read progression is simple: identify the first crease at the point of attack, and if the alley is clogged, bounce to the nearest open gap based on linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he is sitting shallow or crashing hard downhill, this play has little room to operate. Identify whether the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 front, odd fronts with a true nose tackle can clog the initial dive lane more effectively. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the A and B gaps, since a smart user player will abandon coverage responsibilities to fill the dive lane. This play struggles against stacked eight-man fronts or heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders downhill immediately after the snap. HB Base beats light boxes out of nickel or dime packages where defenders are spread out in pass coverage shells and slow to react to the run fake.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call HB Base against six or fewer defenders in the box to avoid running into a stacked front.

Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten when you want to stay ahead of the count and set up play-action later in the drive.

Pair HB Base with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Read Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run fit and the quick pass options, keeping linebackers honest.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the HB into a check release to give the quarterback a safety valve instead of forcing the dive into a loaded box.

Mix in HB Off Tackle and HB Counter from the same personnel group to keep linebacker flow guessing and open up cutback lanes for HB Base later in the game.
