Breakdown

WR Under attacks man and zone coverage with a five man route concept out of Spread Y-Slot Wk. To the left, the outside WR runs a deep in that sits down over the middle while the slot WR breaks off a quick slant underneath it, creating a natural pick and rub combo against man defenders. The single receiver on the right side runs a go route to clear out the deep half while the TE works a deep in from the opposite side, and the backfield receiver releases on a wheel route out of the flat to attack any zone defender sitting low. The primary read starts with the slant/in combo to the left, working to the wheel route as a man beater against overaggressive flat defenders, and finally to the deep in on the right if the underneath windows are clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender pre-snap since the wheel route out of the backfield is designed to exploit linebackers or nickel defenders who bite on the flat and lose the vertical break. Key the underneath linebackers after the snap because their zone drop depth tells you whether the slant/in combo on the left will have a throwing window. Against man coverage, look for the pick action created by the outside WR's deep in crossing paths with the slot WR's slant, which naturally rubs off tight man defenders. If the defense rotates a safety down into the box or shows a two deep shell, the deep in route on the right side becomes the primary answer since it sits behind linebackers but in front of safeties. This play struggles against disciplined zone match coverage or a well timed blitz that gets pressure before the wheel route develops, since the quarterback needs a full two count to let the deep routes mature.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or in third and medium situations where you need a chunk gain but still have room to check down. Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, since the wheel route out of the backfield is your best answer against man coverage with a linebacker in coverage. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, target the deep in route on the right side since it settles in the soft spot behind the underneath zone. Hot route the slot receiver's slant to a quick out if you see a corner sitting hard on the inside route in man coverage. Pair WR Under with Double Slants or Quick Slants in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the wheel route, then mix in RPO Peek Slant to keep linebackers honest against the slant/in combo on the left.
