Mtn HB Counter lines up out of Shotgun in the Spread Y-Slot Wk set with 11 personnel, showing the HB offset in the backfield with pre-snap motion into the counter action. The offensive line pulls the backside guard and tackle to lead through the hole while the frontside blockers down block, creating a misdirection run that attacks the edge after selling the flow one way. This is a power run play designed to punish linebackers who flow hard with the initial motion and overcommit before the ball cuts back, so the primary read is the frontside double team and pulling guard leading through the alley for the HB to press and burst.
Key the play side linebacker and see if he crashes hard on the initial motion flow, that overpursuit is exactly what counter is designed to exploit. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the backfield gap, a disciplined spy or lurking linebacker can blow up the counter before the pullers arrive. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety cheating toward the boundary often signals run support that can beat the counter to the edge. Look at defensive line gap discipline post-snap, if the frontside penetrates upfield instead of holding the line, the cutback lane disappears. Man coverage on the perimeter combined with an aggressive Mike linebacker firing downhill is the biggest counter to this play, since it eliminates the natural bounce lane.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing hard, then trust the counter cut once the pullers get to the hole.
This play hits best on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are playing base run fits and not expecting misdirection.
Pair this with Mtn Buck Sweep and Inside Zone in the same drive so linebackers cannot key run direction off your formation tendencies.
If the defense shows a hard edge blitz off the motion side, consider hot routing the HB to bounce outside quicker or check to RPO Read WR Screen instead.
Watch the play side linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting tight to the line, counter timing will need a patient press before you explode through the crease.
