Inside Zone out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk lines up with four wide receivers stacked outside and a single back offset to run the interior gap. The diagram shows the offensive line covering all five gaps with zone blocking rules while the running back takes the handoff and reads the double team at the point of attack, pressing the mesh point before choosing a lane. This is a run play built off zone blocking scheme, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is the playside double team to backside cutback, letting the runner press the hole and cut off the linebacker flow.
Pre-snap, check the linebacker depth: stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that inside zone struggles against unless you have a lead blocker to account for the extra body. Watch for safety rotation into the box; a single high safety with the other safety creeping down usually means the defense is selling out against the run, so audible to a quick pass concept instead. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles: if they are shooting gaps rather than reading blocks, the interior double teams may not seal in time and you should bounce the run outside. This play beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with linebackers reading run downhill, since the zone blocking creates natural cutback lanes against predictable gap fills. Heavy blitz packages and stacked fronts with an extra defender in the box shut this down quickly, so if you see a nano blitz alignment pre-snap, consider hot routing to a screen or checking to a different play entirely.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since four verticals worth of receivers spread the defense horizontally.
Use the right stick to manually control the running back through the mesh point so you can press the hole longer and let the zone blocking develop before committing to a lane.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so defenses have to respect both the run action and the quick game, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
This works best on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are not selling out to stop the pass and linebackers are playing base run fits.
Sequence Inside Zone early in a series then come back with HB Counter or HB Off Tackle later to keep the defense guessing on gap direction after they start cheating toward the initial zone flow.
