Mtn HB Swing is a check-down and screen hybrid built off the Spread Y-Slot Wk shotgun formation, sending the halfback out to the flat on a swing route while the other four eligible receivers run off coverage vertically to clear space underneath. The offensive line typically slides protection to account for edge pressure, giving the quarterback a quick outlet against blitz-heavy fronts. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to punish teams that drop linebackers into intermediate zones and vacate the flat, with the primary read progression going swing route first, then working back to any underneath crosser or hitch that the coverage opens up.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat or curl to flat defender before the snap, if that defender is sitting at five yards or shallower the swing throw is high risk. Look for two deep safeties with linebackers dropping to intermediate zones, this shell leaves the flat open and is the ideal look for this concept. Watch for a user controlled linebacker spying or shadowing the running back's release, this is the biggest defensive read that kills the play since it allows a jump on the swing route. Man coverage with press corners and blitzing linebackers is a bad matchup for this play since the halfback has no room to work and protection can break down before the swing develops. Key the backside safety rotation post-snap, if he rotates down quickly it signals a run blitz or Cover 3 buzz look that favors the quick swing but also warns of pressure coming off the edge.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short or anytime you need a built in answer to a blitz since the swing route gets the ball out in under two seconds.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender on the halfback's side, if a corner or safety is sitting outside at five yards or less this play loses value fast.

Hot route the backside outside receiver into a quick hitch or drag if you are facing man coverage, since the base concept is more effective against zone shells.

Pair this with Mtn Buck Sweep or HB Off Tackle earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting outside run action, which slows down flat defenders from jumping the swing.

Sequence this play after Dagger or Four Verticals to condition linebackers to sink deep, then come back to this swing to exploit the vacated shallow zone.

Avoid calling this into known Cover 2 sink zones with an active user linebacker spying the backfield, since that defender can undercut the route immediately.
