Breakdown

Mtn Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk with 11 personnel that uses pre-snap motion to shift numbers before the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down in an inside zone scheme with the fullback or blocking back stepping laterally to seal the edge, while the HB takes a downhill inside zone track through the line. This is a run play designed to hit the interior gaps quickly, and the primary read progression is the frontside gap first, then bounce to the backside cutback lane if the initial hole is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker depth and shade before the snap, since a linebacker sitting too far outside opens the inside cutback lane for the HB. Watch for defenders crashing hard on the motion man, which signals man coverage or a run blitz look that can be exploited with the cutback. If the defensive line is stacked with extra bodies in the box or shows a heavy run blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill, this play gets shut down quickly and should be avoided. Post-snap, track the user-controlled linebacker for lurk or spy tendencies since a smart user defender will sit and read the mesh point before committing to a gap. Zone coverage shells with safeties staying deep and linebackers flowing slow to the play side are the best matchup for this run since the frontside gap stays clean longer.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are not selling out to stop the run.

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the inside zone blocking scheme wins clean against under fronts and shaded nose alignments.

Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Read Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run and the quick perimeter throw off similar formation looks.

Mix in Mtn Buck Sweep and HB Counter from this set to keep linebackers guessing on gap direction since both plays start with similar motion and personnel.
