Breakdown

PA Comebacks runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun to hold the second level before releasing four routes into a comeback and dig combination. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback breaking back toward the sideline, the slot runs a corner route up the numbers, the inline TE or slot runs a deep dig crossing back underneath, and the frontside outside receiver breaks off a comeback of his own after selling vertical. This is a man beater at its core, since the double comebacks create natural separation against trailing corners, while the dig gives you a answer versus zone drops that sit on the outside breaking routes. Primary read progression starts with the backside comeback, moves to the deep dig sitting down in the middle of the field, and finishes on the frontside comeback if the defense rolls coverage away from the first two options.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, since single high Cover 3 leaves the deep dig wide open in the middle void while two high shells force you to lean on the outside comebacks. Watch cornerback depth at the line, off coverage corners get beat easily by the comeback break, while press corners can disrupt the timing and force a hot route adjustment. Post-snap, track the flow of linebackers on the play-action fake, if they bite hard on the run action the dig route will be wide open behind them for an easy completion. Beware of user controlled safeties sitting in the deep middle or lurking on the dig route, since a good user can jump the route and turn this into a pick six if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes that get pressure before the comeback routes break, so recognize nano blitz alignments pre-snap and be ready to check into a quicker hot route or throw it away.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball fully through the play-action animation, since paper thin fakes get you blown up by aggressive defensive ends and quick trigger linebackers.

Check the corner depth pre-snap, if they are playing off you have an easy comeback throw once the receiver plants and breaks back, if they are pressed at the line hot route that comeback into a quick out or slant to avoid a jam disrupting timing.

Use the deep dig as your primary answer against zone coverage since it settles in the soft spot behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties, especially versus Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells.

Pair this play with HB Base or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to set up the play-action fake, then call PA Comebacks once the defense starts keying run support with linebackers creeping toward the box.

This play works best on second or third and medium since the comeback routes need enough depth to develop, avoid calling it in short yardage situations where defenders play tight to the line.
