H Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk lines up two receivers to the top who run a deep comeback and a corner-to-out breaking route, clearing out the deep half while the H runs a shallow drag across the formation underneath. Underneath that, a shorter route breaks outside to the boundary and the backfield player releases on a quick out to the flat, giving the QB a full-field high-low read from shallow to deep. This is primarily a man beater since the shallow crosser generates natural separation against man coverage by working across defenders' faces, though it also holds zone defenders with the flat and comeback stretching the width of the field. Primary read progression starts with the shallow drag underneath, works to the flat route, then climbs to the comeback and corner routes if the crosser is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth; two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which allows the comeback and corner routes to sit in soft spots underneath the deep coverage Watch linebacker depth at the snap since the shallow crosser is most vulnerable to a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field reading the quarterback's eyes This play struggles against Cover 3 sky or Cover 3 cloud where a flat defender can carry the shallow route and a deep third defender erases the comeback route Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal shell to attack since the shallow crosser wins immediate separation against man leverage Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the middle of the field or sitting in a hook zone, since that defender can jump the shallow crosser if the quarterback stares it down too long
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium to third and medium when you need a high-percentage completion against man coverage since the shallow crosser wins against tight man leverage almost every time
Pre-snap, identify if the corners are pressed up in man; if so, hot route the shallow crosser to sit down against zone or trust the natural rub concept against man
Motion the H before the snap to confirm man versus zone; if the defender follows across the formation, it is man coverage and the shallow drag becomes your first read
Pair this play with PA Comebacks or Dagger from the same set to keep linebackers honest since both plays start with similar shotgun spread alignment
Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, look to the flat route and comeback route since the shallow crosser will sit in a linebacker's zone and lose the high-low advantage
