Dagger from Spread Y-Slot Wk in Shotgun sends the outside receiver on a deep dig that sits in the middle of the field while the inside slot receiver clears vertically on a seam or go route to stack the safety, creating the classic dagger combo on the right side. On the left, the play has a quick out breaking flat route, a vertical dig from the wing, and a shallow drag underneath crossing the formation to give the quarterback a checkdown against pressure. This is primarily a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, using the vertical clear-out to open the deep dig as the primary read, with the shallow drag and flat route as the secondary progression against man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap check safety depth and spacing, since two deep safeties splitting the field wide open in the middle signals Cover 2 and tells you the dig should have a clean throwing lane. Watch the flat defender and underneath linebackers after the snap, since a hard flat drop or LB sitting on the drag route can bait the quarterback into a risky throw over the middle. Identify user controlled safeties who might lurk the dig route or bail late into a deep third, since a smart user defender can jump this route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a single high safety struggles against this concept because the vertical clear out route occupies the deep middle defender, but if the corner sinks into the dig lane instead of covering the vertical threat it can shut down the primary read. Man coverage with a linebacker blitz is the biggest threat to this play, since the dig route takes time to develop and pressure up the middle forces the quarterback into the shallow drag or flat option before the play fully opens up.
Usage Tips
Look for two deep safeties or a single high safety pre snap to confirm this is a zone beater matchup, since the dig route sits right in the soft spot behind linebackers and in front of deep coverage.
Take the vertical route on the right side first with your eyes to freeze the safety, then work down to the deep dig as your true first read since the clear out route occupies the deep defender.
If the corner jumps the underneath drag or the flat route, hot route the dig to speed up if you see LB spy or blitz coming off the edge, since that route needs time to develop.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, then pair it with PA Dagger or X Dagger later in a series to keep the defense guessing between the play action version and this straight drop version.
Against man coverage rely on the shallow drag and flat route as quick outlets, and consider sequencing this with Double Slants or Quick Slants earlier in the game to set up defenders biting on shorter routes before hitting the deep dig.
