Defensive Reads

Look at the cornerbacks pre-snap, tight man coverage on the outside receivers signals that the slants underneath will have room to work against inside leverage. Watch the middle linebacker depth, a shallow drop or blitz look opens up the slant crossing lanes immediately after the snap. If you see a two high shell with soft zone drops, the slants can get squeezed by underneath zone defenders sitting in the passing lanes, so be ready to check the flat route instead. Pre-snap, check for a single high safety look because that usually means man under, which is exactly what the slants are designed to exploit.

Hot route the backside slant into a quick out if you see hard outside cornerback press to avoid a jam at the line.

Use this in a two play sequence with RPO Peek Slant or Quick Slants so the defense sees similar route stems and cannot key on the pass concept.

Best used on second and short or third and short where the quick timing throws to the slants can move the chains without needing a deep shot.
