RPO Zone Peek is a run/pass option out of Shotgun 11 personnel that pairs an Inside Zone run scheme with a quick peek route to the backside, usually a bubble or slant look designed to attack numbers in the box. The QB reads the second level defender (typically a linebacker or slot defender) at the mesh point: if that defender crashes down to fill the run lane, the QB pulls and fires the peek route into the vacated space, and if he stays wide or drops for coverage, the QB hands off into a clean zone run lane. This is a zone beater against light boxes and aggressive run fits, giving you a built in answer to overpursuit without needing a formation check.

Defensive Reads

Key the second level defender closest to the peek route at the snap, his first step tells you whether the QB will pull or hand off Base defenses with linebackers sitting in run fits and light numbers in the box are the easiest to exploit since the peek throw punishes any crash Zone coverages with shallow linebacker drops struggle to cover both the run gap and the peek window at the same time Man coverage with a robber or lurking defender sitting in the peek throwing lane can bait the QB into a bad pull read, so watch for a user controlled defender sitting artificially low near the line Heavy blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can still be there in time for the mesh point read, so if you see overload pressure be ready to get the ball out fast or check to the run instead of hesitating

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to decide if you want to bait the run or hunt the peek route before the snap even happens

Target down and distance situations of 1st and 10 or 2nd and short where defenses are more willing to sell out against the run

Watch for a linebacker cheating toward the line pre-snap, that is your green light to pull and throw the peek route immediately off the snap

If the defense shows a two high shell with light box counts, trust the give and let your zone blocking work, this play punishes light fronts

Pair this call with Inside Zone from the same set to keep defenses honest, then mix in RPO Peek Slant or RPO Read Bubble later in a series so the second level defenders hesitate on every snap

Against teams that consistently sim pressure or use a spy near the box, have a hot route ready on the peek receiver to convert to a quick out if the defender squats on the initial route
