RPO Zone Peek is a true run pass option built off inside zone action from the Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk set with 11 personnel. The offensive line and HB execute the zone run scheme while the QB peeks a quick pass window (typically a slant or hitch from the slot) as his primary read, giving him the option to hand off or pull and throw based on the second level defender's run fit. This play is a zone and light box beater since it punishes linebackers who crash down on the run action, and the primary read progression is box count first, then the peeking receiver against the flowing linebacker or slot defender.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify if the defense is in a two high shell with soft zone coverage since that usually means fewer defenders in the box and an easier peek read for the QB. Watch linebacker depth, if they are stacked tight to the line of scrimmage they are likely selling out against inside zone and vulnerable to the peek throw. Post snap, key any user controlled linebacker or nickel defender who stays home and does not bite on the run fake, since that defender can jump the peek route and cause a turnover. Man coverage with inside leverage on the slot defender is the best way to shut this down since it removes the throwing window before the QB can even make his read. Look for a nano blitz or overload pressure package that crashes the play side, since fast pressure can force the QB to make a rushed decision before the run fit is even revealed.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, lean run and let the RPO read confirm it post snap.
Watch the play side linebacker or slot defender at the snap, if he steps up to fill the run gap, pull the ball and hit the peek route immediately for a free gain.
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage since defenses are more likely to sell out against the run.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Read Bubble in the same set to keep defenders honest, since all three share similar zone action but attack different leverage points.
Sprinkle in HB Mid Draw and Inside Zone from this formation to condition the defense to respect the run fake, which makes the RPO peek window even bigger later in the game.
