Breakdown

Slot Fades is a vertical man beater built around one on one fade route winners on the outside, with both the slot receiver and outside receiver stemming into fade releases to attack cornerbacks in press or trail technique. The TE and RB work underneath as safety valves on shorter routes, giving you a checkdown if the fades are blanketed. Your primary read progression starts with the boundary fade against single high or man coverage, then works to the slot fade if the cornerback opens his hips early, before checking down to the underneath routes on the backside.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap check safety alignment, a single high safety or empty box signals man coverage and green light for the fades, while two deep safeties mean you should lean on the underneath checkdowns instead. Watch cornerback depth and technique at the line, press alignment with no safety help over the top is the ideal look for this play since fades win with timing before the corner can flip and run. Post-snap track the cornerback hip turn, if he opens early and runs vertical with the receiver the window on the sideline shrinks fast so throw with anticipation or bail to the checkdown. Beware Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with deep zone defenders sinking under the fades, these shut the play down unless you have a genuine size or speed advantage on the outside. Watch for user controlled safeties rotating late into a two deep shell to bracket the fade, this is a common defensive counter that should send you to the TE or RB underneath instead of forcing the deep throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and long or in the red zone when you need a big chunk play and can live with a low completion percentage on the fade throws. Identify press man coverage pre-snap and immediately key the boundary corner, if he is playing outside leverage throw the back shoulder fade, if he is playing inside leverage throw the fade to the numbers. Hot route your TE into a seam or drag if you see zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, since the fades lose value against zone unless you have a size mismatch at receiver. Pair this play with Slot Outs or Quick Slants earlier in a drive to condition defenders to sit on shorter routes, then come back to Slot Fades once the corners start jumping underneath throws. Against Cover 2 look, target the fade away from the deep half safety help and throw with anticipation before the corner can get over the top.
