Inside Zone out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk lines up with two receivers stacked wide on each side and the RB offset in the backfield next to the QB. The diagram shows the entire offensive line stepping in unison toward the play side with the RB path cutting downhill through the A or B gap based on the flow of the blockers, which is the hallmark of a zone blocking scheme rather than a gap or power scheme. There are no route concepts shown here since all four wide targets are uninvolved decoys, confirming this is a pure zone run play designed to attack whichever crease opens up front. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback lane first, then bounce to the play side alley if the backside gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he is sitting shallow and reading run fit fast, the backside cutback becomes the higher value lane. Watch for stacked box fronts with a safety cheating down into the box pre-snap, since this signals run blitz and Inside Zone will get met quickly at the line. Identify whether the defense is in a one high or two high shell, one high alignments with the safety in the deep middle often leave light boxes that this run scheme exploits. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side call, as this often opens the backside cutback lane if the offensive line executes its zone steps correctly. Against Cover 0 or all out blitz packages, the RB needs to identify the free rusher immediately and either cut away from that gap or bounce it outside before the backfield gets collapsed.
Usage Tips
Run this play into wider defensive fronts with light boxes, ideally six or fewer defenders in the box, since the zone steps need lateral space to create seams. Use pre-snap motion or a quick shift to bait linebackers into showing blitz or man coverage before the snap, which tells you whether the alley will be crashed early. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see Cover 0 or man coverage with no safety help, turning this into a built-in check option against blitz-heavy defenses. Pair this call with RPO Zone Peek and RPO Read Bubble from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run fit without opening up quick throwing lanes. Best used on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep defenses honest before dialing up play-action shots like PA Dagger or PA Cross later in the series.
