Inside Cross is a man beater built around a crossing route concept out of the Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk 11 personnel set. The primary crosser works from the backside of the formation and settles into the middle of the field, creating natural rubs against man defenders while shallow and intermediate routes stretch the underneath zones for zone coverage looks. Protection is a standard five man slide, so the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working across the field, then works down to the underneath shallow route, and finally checks down to the backfield if the middle gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the outside receivers, which signals the crosser will have room to work against trail defenders. Check linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow zone drops from linebackers can jump the underneath crossing route if they sit too aggressively. Look for a single high safety shell, which usually means man coverage underneath and opens up the deep crosser as the primary read against Cover 1 or Cover 3 man variants. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells with two deep safeties, since the crosser can get squeezed by a sinking linebacker or a user controlled safety dropping into the throwing lane. Identify blitz packages by counting box defenders pre-snap, and if you see six or more defenders threatening the line, get the ball out quickly on the shallow route since protection may break down against a nano blitz.

Identify man versus zone pre-snap by checking if defenders are lined up across from receivers with no visible zone leverage cushion, since the crosser thrives against man coverage due to natural pick action.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to see if a defender follows the flexed Y, confirming man coverage and opening up the crosser as your first read.

Hot route the underneath shallow route to a drag or spot if you see a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone, giving your quarterback a quicker outlet against zone drops.

Pair this play with Slot Cross or Double Cross in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing on which receiver is running the deep crosser, forcing user controlled defenders to guess wrong in coverage.

Run this on second and medium to third and short situations where defenses expect a quick underneath completion, since the crosser can pick up extra yards after the catch against soft zone shells.
