Inside Cross is a man beater built around a deep crossing route that works from one side of the formation to the other, stressing man defenders with natural traffic and picking up leverage as it works across the field. The concept pairs the crosser with an underneath shallow or drag route and a vertical clear-out route, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch to read from the crosser to the underneath option. Primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working across the middle, then works down to the underneath shallow route as the checkdown if the crosser is taken away by a lurking linebacker or safety.
Defensive Reads
Identify if the cornerback across from the crosser is playing man technique with inside or outside leverage, since outside leverage invites an easy pick up for the receiver working across the field. Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender at the snap for a lurk drop into the shallow crossing lane, which signals zone coverage and should push your read to the checkdown option. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the crosser once it clears the initial traffic, especially against blitz packages that rush five or six and leave one on one matchups on the perimeter. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep zone drops can clog the crossing route, so key on the safety rotation post-snap to see if a defender sinks into the throwing lane. If the defense shows a nano blitz or edge pressure package pre-snap, get the ball out quickly on the underneath route since the crosser needs extra time to develop against man coverage.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like corners lined up tight on receivers or a single high safety shading the deep middle, since the crosser thrives against man leverage. If you see two deep safeties in a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, hot route the crosser into a shallow drag or bring in a hitch to avoid the traffic in the middle of the field. This play pairs well with Quick Slants or RPO Peek Slant out of the same formation to keep the defense honest against both quick game and the developing crosser. Use Inside Cross on second and medium to second and long situations where the quarterback has time to let the crosser develop and clear underneath traffic. Sequence this play after running HB Mid Draw or Inside Zone to get linebackers to bite on run action, opening up the crossing lane over the middle.
